Michael Harrison

Paintings in Oils

His works are wide ranging and diverse, in both choice of subject and location :His hallmark work
are the intimate small landscape studies completed plein air; These studies continue to be his
preferred subject. Through commissioned projects, he has also become increasingly drawn
to studies of cathedrals and church interiors

Influences

From his early years his style has been influenced by Sickert and the Nabis School. There are
obvious i acknowledgments to Constable“s oil sketches.

Working Practices

It has always been his feeling that small paintings , particularly if they are made from direct
observation and response to the subject, are often more telling and emotive in their impact than
large studio works that are resolved in every detail.
He works from a limited colour palette, perhaps with only four or five colours. He aims for results
that are well-keyed and exploit a good tonal range. In turn, whatever the subject, this enhances
the sense of mood in his paintings and results in the work having a sense of immediacy and
directness. Although small-scale, his paintings seek to capture and convey the space between the seeing
and the subject, but most importantly, ensure both the viewer’s engagement and sense of
imagination.
